ECG Reading Center (EPICARE)

EpiCareThe Epidemiological Cardiology Research Center (EPICARE) offers competitively priced research laboratory technology for receipt and processing of electrocardiograms (ECGs). EPICARE and its investigators have been engaged in population electrocardiographic research for more than 3 decades.  Currently, we are the ECG reading center for more than 20 national and international epidemiologic studies and clinical trials. The mission of EPICARE is to continuously refine the methods of ECG acquisition in population studies and to provide a standard classification of ECG findings in uniform, clearly defined, and objective terms. Our mission is also to train future researchers in these areas.

EPICARE has a variety of flexible computing platforms designed to accommodate various study requirements. In addition to the GE Research Workstation (RSW), EPICARE's main digital processing system, we have recently added the EPICARE MUSE ECG Reporting Application (EMERALD) which is our new ECG acquisition, management, analysis and reporting application. EMERALD’s core units consist of the GE MUSE v7.1 ECG management system, coupled with an in-house ECG Minnesota Code and Novacode analysis program.

Current services provided by EPICARE include visual or computer assigned standard Minnesota Codes and Novacodes as well as detailed continuous measurement of different ECG waveforms including QT interval, P wave indices, heart rate variability, continuous measurements of left ventricular hypertrophy, and many other subclinical ECG findings that are determined to be of prognostic significance in population studies.
