Dr. Bertoni is a Professor and Department Chair in Public Health Sciences/ Epidemiology and Prevention with a joint appointment in General Internal Medicine. He is a general internist and epidemiologist with research interests in diabetes and its complications, cardiovascular disease, quality improvement in chronic disease, and ethnic disparities in health and healthcare.

He is currently a co-investigator in the cohort study "Multi Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)" , the multicenter clinical trial "Action for Health in Diabetes (Look AHEAD)", testing weight loss in adults with diabetes to prevent cardiovascular morbidity and the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort study. He is a co-PI of a translational research trial called Lifestyle Interventions for Treatment of Diabetes (LIFT). He recently concluded a pilot study, Translating Dietary Trials into the Community, and an ancillary study to Look AHEAD: Determinants of Brain Natriuretic Peptide in Diabetes. He is Director of Research and Evaluation for the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity, and an afilliate of the Wake Forest Translational Science Institute Dr. Bertoni precepts Internal Medicine residents in clinic.
